PM Modi Chairs Review Meeting as Cyclone Biparjoy Intensifies, Evacuation Efforts Underway

PM Modi: While Cyclone Biparjoy became a “extremely severe cyclonic storm,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a review meeting today. On Thursday afternoon, it is anticipated to make landfall somewhere between Pakistan’s Karachi and Gujarat’s Kutch.

PM Modi Urges Officials to Ensure Safe Evacuation as Cyclone Alert Issued for Gujarat’s Saurashtra and Kutch

The PM instructed officials to take all reasonable steps to ensure that residents of susceptible areas are safely evacuated after being briefed on efforts made to lessen the impact of the cyclone. PM Modi tasked staff with maintaining all crucial services while being ready to immediately restore them in the event of harm. Additionally, he urged them to guarantee animal safety. A cyclone alert has been issued by the meteorology office for Gujarat’s Saurashtra and Kutch beaches. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the sea conditions along the beaches of Saurashtra and Kutch will likely be “rough to very rough” through Wednesday and “very rough to high” on Thursday. “The cyclone is likely to have an impact on Kutch, Jamnagar, Morbi, Gir Somnath, Porbandar, and Devbhumi Dwarka districts during June 13–15 with heavy rainfall and very high wind speed that may go as high as 150 kmph,” it said.

Kutch District Prepares Residents for Cyclone Impact

The Kutch district has begun relocating residents from low-lying regions to makeshift shelters. Officials stated, “We have constructed around shelters to evacuate the residents at the coastal communities. Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister, went to the State Emergency Operation Centre on Sunday to assess how ready the coastal districts were for any emergency. Fishing is not recommended in the seas along the coasts of Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Lakshadweep, according to the IMD. The state governments are urged to keep a careful eye on things, check in on their local conditions frequently, and take the necessary precautions. • Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ Strengthens to ‘Extremely Severe’: Brace for the Tempest Gujarat!

Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ Strengthens to ‘Extremely Severe’: Brace for the Tempest Gujarat!

The formidable Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ which has been advancing over the east-central Arabian Sea, has now escalated to an ‘Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm’, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The maritime tempest is said to be moving northwards with expectations to touch base with the coasts of Pakistan and adjoining Saurashtra and Kutch regions this coming Thursday.

An Intense Cyclone Poses Severe Threats

As we understand, the categorisation of cyclones is done by the IMD based on the 3-minute average maximum sustained wind speeds. The current status of ‘Biparjoy’ as an ‘Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm’ suggests wind speeds ranging between 166-220 kmph. Coastal Gujarat and Maharashtra, alongside Goa and other coastal regions, were alerted on Saturday to brace for the storm’s fury as it’s projected to intensify in the next 24 hours. In light of this, Tithal Beach in Valsad, Gujarat, a popular destination on the Arabian Sea coast, has been temporarily closed for tourists until June 14.

    Preparatory Measures and Warnings Issued

For the safety of local communities, orders were also issued to fishing operations to stand down for the next five days in the eastern and central Arabian Sea, including the Indian Saurashtra and Kutch region. The IMD has also cautioned about heavy rainfall at isolated places in Kerala and coastal Karnataka in the upcoming days.

On the other side of the border, Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif has instructed for emergency measures to be implemented, in anticipation of the cyclone. The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) in response, has issued a ‘red alert’ and suspended shipping activities in lieu of the intensifying cyclone.
With such extreme weather conditions imminent, citizens are urged to stay informed and follow guidelines issued by their local meteorological departments. As we all know, “Forewarned is forearmed”, let’s hope the preparations are adequate and the cyclone’s impact can be minimised. Stay safe, everyone!

  • As Cyclone Biparjoy intensifies into severe storm, monsoon likely to hit Kerala by June 9, says IMD

As Cyclone Biparjoy intensifies into severe storm, monsoon likely to hit Kerala by June 9, says IMD

Cyclone Biparjoy: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted that all conditions are favourable for the onset of monsoon in Kerala by June 9 with Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ rapidly intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm.

A senior IMD scientist said the southern peninsula will get rain under the influence of the cyclonic storm and a low-pressure system developing in the Bay of Bengal. However, further progress of the monsoon beyond the southern peninsula will happen after the cyclone degenerates.

    Not a thumping start

“The cloud mass is concentrated around this system and enough moisture is not reaching the Kerala coast. Though the criteria for monsoon onset can be met in the next two days, it will not be a thumping start,” Mahesh Palawat, vice president (climate and meteorology) of Skymet Weather said.

After the onset over Kerala, the monsoon will remain “weak” until the storm degenerates around June 12, he said.

    Persistence of westerly winds

The IMD forecast mentioned that the latest meteorological features associated with monsoon onset over Kerala show that there is persistence of westerly winds over the south Arabian Sea, an increase in the depth of westerly winds to middle tropospheric levels and increase of cloudiness over areas covering the southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep and Kerala coasts.

“Under such a scenario, the conditions are becoming favorable for monsoon onset over Kerala during the next 48 hours,” the IMD said in its Wednesday bulletin.
