Heavy Rainfall : IMD forecast flash flood and heavy rainfall in Central India, West coast

Heavy Rainfall: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on Sunday that areas of central India and the west coast are likely to suffer heavy rainfall of over 200mm in the upcoming 3–4 days, which could result in flash floods in numerous spots.

On Sunday evening, according to weather forecast, a low-pressure system had developed due to cyclonic activity over the northwest Bay of Bengal and its surrounding areas, near the shores of West Bengal and Odisha. This is probably going to get worse and turn into a depression that moves across Chhattisgarh and Odisha to the west-northwest.

The monsoon trough, an elongated area of low pressure, is also active and south of its normal position, and the weather service predicts that it will stay that way for the next 4-5 days.

“Already, some parts of Odisha and Konkan region have started receiving very heavy and extremely heavy rain on Sunday. Under the influence of the depression, rain will increase over central India during the next 3-4 days,” said IMD director general, M Mohapatra.

Weather Updates: IMD States Northwest to Receive Rain Today

Weather Updates: The Indian Meteorological Department said that rain is likely to increase in northwest India from today. Widespread rainfall is highly probable over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.

The reason for the increase in rainfall is due to a low-pressure area that is lying over the northwest Arabian Sea. The monsoon trough is likely to continue to move northwards over the next 2 days.

The western Himalayan region is likely to be affected by a fresh western disturbance. Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation is lying over East Rajasthan, extending up to lower tropospheric levels.

A trough runs from the cyclonic circulation to the West-central Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh coast.

Keeping these systems in mind, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rain and thunderstorm/lightning is highly likely over Jammu & Kashmir till July, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, north Punjab, and north Haryana-Chandigarh till July 31.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on July 28 and 29. Only isolated rain is likely over Delhi around July 28.

  • Weather Updates: Below-Normal Rain in Maharashtra

Weather Updates: Below-Normal Rain in Maharashtra

Weather Updates: The IMD said on Monday that August would begin with below-normal rain in parts of Maharashtra.

The latest weather bulletin from the Indian Meteorological Department stated that most regions of Maharashtra, especially Konkan and Vidarbha, were likely to witness below-normal rainfall till August 4.

An extended range forecast by the weather department earlier, revealed less than average rainfall patterns in central India, including Maharashtra, till July 28. However, the week after would also witness below-normal rainfall over central parts of India and the adjoining north Peninsular India, the forecast continued.

Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, IMD Pune, said, “The monsoon trough is very likely to be in the north of its normal position during most days till August 4. This will cause good rain over North India but less-than-normal monsoon rainfall over central India, Maharashtra, and the adjoining north peninsular India.”

He said, “In addition to this factor, no significant weather system adjacent to Maharashtra is present to aid good rainfall activity. The sheer zone as well as the offshore trough have also dissipated. These two systems had earlier caused extensive rainfall activity in parts of Maharashtra.”

According to Kashyapi, there should not be any significant precipitation over Maharashtra during the next few days.

“Parts of Maharashtra are likely to see only subdued rainfall activity during the next 7-8 days. Konkan, which is one of the rainiest locations in India, does not have a heavy rain warning during the next few days. The region will only experience fairly widespread rainfall during the next five to six days. Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, meanwhile, will experience scattered very light to light rain during the next week. We also don’t expect much rainfall (only scattered to fairly widespread rain) over Vidarbha till early August,” said Kashyapi.

Temperatures are also likely to rise slightly in parts of Maharashtra, as the rainfall activity and clouding would reduce in the coming days.

“However, parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada have a warning for thundery activity/lightning forecast for July 27 and 28 along with gusty winds. The increase in the maximum temperature is likely to result in thunderstorm activity due to the available moisture in the air and increased solar radiation.”

Pune is also likely to see very light to light rain till July 28, followed by very light rainfall at least till early August.

  • Weather Updates: Scanty Rainfall in Goa for Two Weeks

Weather Updates: Scanty Rainfall in Goa for Two Weeks

Weather Updates: This past month, Goa received torrential rainfall for over a fortnight, now the Indian meteorological department Panaji has recorded state average rainfall below 20mm for the last six days, including below 10mm during the last three days.

However, the meteorological department has forecast a subtle increase in rainfall on Sunday. “There will be a marginal increase, but monsoon activity is very likely to remain weak for about two weeks as per IMD’s extended range forecast,” said Rahul M, an IMD Panaji scientist.

The system forming over Northern Gujarat is unlikely to trigger a revival of the monsoon. The monsoon trough, a prominent feature of the southwest monsoon system, is likely to slowly shift northwards in the next three to four days, resulting in a lean monsoon activity.

“The marginal increase on Sunday may sustain for only one or two days, as the system is not in an ideal location and its intensity will not be significant, “ said the IMD scientist.

In a rainy month with extremely heavy rainfall of over 200 mm recorded at a few places, the 6% deficit of June was wiped off within a day. This season’s wettest 24-hour spell of 161.7 mm was also recorded this month on July 8.

On Saturday the season total touched 1981.2 mm as compared to a normal of 1699 mm. Despite the lean spell, the surplus is still reasonable at 16.6%.

During the 24-hour dry spell till Saturday morning, Pernem recorded the highest rainfall of 15.8mm and all other regions recorded rainfall below 10 mm.

The IMD has also issued a ‘yellow’ alert for today, Thursday, warning of light to moderate rainfall. Moderate rainfall is also expected on Friday and Saturday, while light rainfall is a possibility on Sunday.

The maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 35.1 degrees Celsius, which is close to normal for this time of the year. The minimum temperature was 28.2 degrees Celsius, a degree above the normal for this time of the year. The maximum temperature is expected to fall to about 33 degrees Celsius on Friday.

Vikram Singh, an Executive Engineer, said that in Gurgaon, many of the critical points such as all underpasses, Narsinghpur, Medanta road, Hero Honda Chowk, Sector 9A, Golf Course Road, Sector 30/31 dividing road, Mayfield Garden, Signature Tower, MDI Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk and Rajeev Chowk were not waterlogged.
