AI Study Challenges Fingerprint Authentication, Says “Every Fingerprint is Not Unique”; Check Details

An AI study conducted by Columbia University has raised questions about the belief that fingerprints are the gold standard of personal identification. Check out the findings of the study below.

AI Study on Fingerprints

AI Study: An AI study conducted by Columbia University has raised questions about the belief that fingerprints are the gold standard of personal identification as every individual has a unique fingerprint. The groundbreaking research, led by undergraduate Gabe Guo and his team at Columbia University, used a deep learning algorithm to analyze a database of 60,000 fingerprints.

The Findings of the Study

The AI study discovered that fingerprints from different fingers of the same person often shared striking similarities. In some cases, the accuracy of the AI in linking these prints approached a staggering 77%.

Potential Implications

While the study doesn’t claim that all fingerprints are identical, it significantly challenges the notion of absolute uniqueness. It has potential implications for the future of forensic science and fingerprint-based identification systems.

What Forensic Experts Say

The AI-based study has received varying responses from forensic experts across the world. Where some experts have raised questions on the finding as it lacks conclusive evidence regarding the uniqueness of fingerprints, others like Dr Sarah Fieldhouse from Staffordshire University have questioned the accuracy and consistency of the AI tool’s markers.
