Apple Inc had started ambitious Project Titan in 2014, as part of its automotive efforts to develop a self-driving car. Since then, the project’s progress has been uneven.
Apple scales back self-driving car, launch delayed to 2026
Apple, however, is rethinking its plans and has pushed back the anticipated launch date of its ambitious self-driving car to 2026. Shares of the iPhone maker dropped 2.4% following the report.
Technically, a fully automatic car without a pedal and steering wheel is not feasible
Apple is now working on a less ambitious design that will just support autonomous capabilities on highways and contain a steering wheel and pedals.
The business wants to develop a vehicle that will enable drivers operate other tasks while on the freeway and alert them in time to switch to manual control.
Apple has now pushed the launch of its electric car as early as 2025 and is refocussing the project around full self-driving capabilities.
The ideal car of Apple would have no steering wheels and pedals, while interiors designed around autonomous driving.
