Apple Sends Armenian iPhone Users State-Sponsored Attack Alerts after India, Details

Apple: After India, Apple has sent notifications to a small number of iPhone users in Armenia, indicating that they may be the target of “state-sponsored attackers”. Read on to learn more.

Apple sends threat alerts to iPhone users in Armenia

The warnings were sent out on October 30, 2023, following a similar alarm that was sent out that same day to certain Indian politicians. There are good reasons to think that the hacked iPhones may have been compromised, even though the alerts do not specifically identify the culprits or the use of NSO Pegasus spyware.

Local media Media.am reports that the warning indicates that the receiving iPhone “has likely been infected with Pegasus spyware, which was most likely installed by the Israeli company NSO Group on behalf of the Azerbaijani government.”

The Azerbaijani authorities are believed to have used Pegasus to target about a thousand people inside their borders, according to research conducted by Media.am. Although it is difficult to get an accurate estimate, it is anticipated that the number of impacted individuals in Armenia will be much larger, perhaps in the thousands.

Apple’s limitations

Apple‘s message highlights the likelihood of state-sponsored hacking and offers suggestions for consumers to take, but it doesn’t go into specifics about the attackers or their methods.
