Dark Thursday for techies as Google India joins layoff trend; 453 Employees Terminated via Email

Google: Tech Giant’s India division has laid off 453 employees from various departments. The terminations were conveyed via email, with Sanjay Gupta, the Country Head and Vice President of Google India, being the sender of the message. The layoffs reportedly took place on Thursday night, and it remains unclear whether these job cuts are part of Alphabet Inc’s plan to reduce its workforce by 12,000 employees globally or if they represent a new round of layoffs.

What did Sundar Pichai say on Google India layoff?

The email sent out by Gupta is said to have included some inputs from Sundar Pichai, the Alphabet CEO, who reportedly took full responsibility for the layoffs. In the message, Pichai also promised that the affected employees would receive support in line with local practices. However, it is still uncertain how many employees have been impacted worldwide, and whether there will be more layoffs in the future.

This trend of layoffs is not limited to Google, as other tech companies have also announced job cuts. For instance, Amazon has planned to lay off 18,000 employees, while Meta (formerly Facebook) has let go of 13,000 workers. In a statement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took full responsibility for his company’s layoffs, citing over-hiring during and before the pandemic phase as the reason for the job cuts.

Microsoft on the same route as well

In January, Microsoft revealed that it planned to lay off 10,000 employees, which constituted almost 5% of its total workforce. Similarly, after acquiring Twitter for $44 billion in late October, Elon Musk announced that the company would be laying off 3,700 employees.
