Google: As the default search engine for iPhones, we’ve grown accustomed to Google. Though many may believe that Apple made the decision to maintain Google as the search engine by default on iPhones, iPads, and Macs’ Safari browsers because Google is the best search engine, the truth is that Google pays Apple a significant sum of money to remain the search engine of choice for iPhone owners.
How much does Google pay Apple?
As part of an agreement to have Google appear as the default search engine on Safari, Google is thought to have paid Apple between $10 billion and $20 billion. However, a precise figure is now available. According to a New York Times article, the iPhone maker will receive $18 billion in 2021, citing two individuals with knowledge of the deal.
These numbers surfaced during Google‘s current legal battle with the US, where the search engine giant is accused of striking anticompetitive agreements with Apple and other parties in order to keep Google Search as the default tool.
How does Google benefit from this move?
According to an article, Apple’s advancements in search technology had Google anxious. Richer web results similar to those on Google started to appear in Spotlight, an iPhone search feature from Apple.
Following that, it was alleged that Google sought to create an iPhone version of Spotlight in order to undercut the app. Also, it aimed to convince more iPhone owners to switch from Apple’s Safari web browser to Google’s Chrome browser. To keep its dominance in the search engine market google made this move.
