India’s journey toward 6G innovation has gained momentum with a collaboration between IIT Delhi and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). This partnership is a crucial step in advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India a global leader in 6G technology. The initiative focuses on developing indigenous hardware and components necessary for the next generation of communication systems.
As part of the Department of Telecommunications’ Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) 6G initiative, IIT Delhi and C-DOT have come together to work on “Building Blocks for THz Communication Front Ends.” These components are vital for creating the advanced systems required for 6G networks, as well as other applications such as military communication and material characterization.
The Ministry of Communications emphasised that this project aims to establish a robust 6G ecosystem, ensuring secure, intelligent, and high-quality connectivity. This endeavor aligns with India’s larger goal of fostering innovation and building self-reliance in advanced technology.
The collaboration utilises IIT Delhi’s cutting-edge facilities, working alongside SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research) Kolkata to develop THz components. These components will pave the way for large-scale chip fabrication within India, supporting the government’s Make in India initiative.
By focusing on developing indigenous technology, India aims to reduce dependency on imports while strengthening its position in the global technology landscape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for 6G is rooted in innovation and ambition. During his Independence Day speech in 2024, PM Modi confidently shared, “We are already working in mission mode for 6G, and we shall surprise the world with our progress.” This collaboration between IIT Delhi and C-DOT is a testament to that mission, highlighting India’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in cutting-edge technology.
With this partnership, India is poised to make significant advancements in 6G communication systems, setting the stage for global leadership in next-generation connectivity.
