All about ‘Pan’, Saturn’s Moon

The post has revealed that M.R. Showalter discovered the moon Pan in 1990 and that Voyager 2 images were used to document its discovery. With a mean radius of 8.8 miles (14.1 kilometres) and an orbital distance of 83,000 miles (134,000 kilometres) from Saturn, Pan is the innermost moon known to exist. It is located in the Encke Gap of Saturn’s A-ring. It serves as a shepherd moon and maintains the Encke Gap by orbiting Saturn every 13.8 hours. The opening in Saturn’s A ring is 200 miles (325 km) long. The number of moons orbiting Saturn is estimated to be 150, of which 145 are known to science.
