New SIM Card Rules: Beginning on December 1, the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) will implement new SIM card restrictions in an effort to combat cyber fraud. August of this year saw the announcement of the new regulations, which are centred on the purchase and sale of SIM cards. Read on to learn more about the new rules.
New SIM Card Rules
These regulations are strictly implemented and enforced by the Central Government due to the seriousness of frauds committed by fake SIM cards. Penalties for breaking the guidelines are detailed and include fines and imprisonment.
Highlights of the new SIM card regulations that go into effect on December 1st
Demographic Data Collection
Customers who buy SIM cards to use with their current numbers need to provide their demographic information and Aadhaar.
SIM Dealer Verification
Verification is an essential process for all SIM card vendors. Selling SIM cards now requires registration, and police verification is handled by telecom operators. A punishment of Rs. 10 lakh could be imposed for noncompliance.
Bulk SIM Card Issuance
The issue of SIM cards in bulk is restricted by new regulations. Only those with business connections are able to purchase SIM cards in large quantities for themselves. Still, consumers are still able to get up to nine SIM cards on a single ID.
SIM Card Deactivation Rule
Deactivated SIM cards are not transferable to another person until after a ninety-day period.
