Oxford Scientists Design Prosthetic Hand Controlled By Wearer’s Breath

Scientists at Oxford University have developed a prosthetic hand especially for children, powered by the wearer’s breaths. According to the scientists, the equipment is light in weight, quite inexpensive, easy to maintain, comfortable, and simple to operate, making it perfect for young children.

This prosthetic hand will benefit children who are very young or whose bodies are unsuitable for existing prosthetic hands that require a harness and cable, and a lot more effort that takes ages to master.

A journal called Prosthesis published the conclusion by the journalists on July 29, 2022. The product is controlled specifically by the breathing of children. To use this, children have to breathe and power a bladeless turbine that will control the prosthetic fingers, the outlet further said.

The machinery is specifically designed for use by children, as they are easily able to generate the amount of air required to power it, and the way the device is geared determines how quickly it learns things.

Compared to other existing prosthetic hand designs, this one designed by a University of Oxford team is simple to use and maintain.

Since the early nineteenth century, most prosthetic hands use wires and have been driven by the body. Scientists have made a little progress this time in developing novel methods of powering prostheses.

The most common type of prosthetic hand still depends on many wires and can be unreasonably expensive to maintain because it may need an expert for its installation and maintenance.

According to the researchers, the gadget will benefit youngsters in underprivileged countries who may not have access to cable technology.
