Twitter Closes Two Offices in India Amid Cost-Cutting Efforts, details here

Twitter: Twitter has closed two of its three offices in India and instructed employees to work from home, as part of its efforts to cut costs and become profitable. Elon Musk’s Twitter fired more than 90 percent of its staff in India last year, and the offices in New Delhi and Mumbai have now been closed. The company continues to operate an office in Bengaluru that mainly houses engineers. Twitter’s move suggests it is currently placing less importance on the Indian market, even though India is regarded as a crucial growth market for US tech giants such as Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google.

Twitter Closes Two Offices in India

Twitter is considered one of India’s most significant public forums and has become a place of heated political discourse, as well as home to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 86.5 million followers. However, revenue in India is not substantial for Musk’s firm, which also has to deal with strict content regulations and increasingly astute local competition. Since the $44 billion buyout, Twitter has failed to pay millions of dollars in rent for its San Francisco headquarters and London offices, and the platform has been sued by multiple contractors over unpaid services. The company has also auctioned off everything from bird statues to espresso machines to raise money.

Twitter’s Importance in India

An exodus of workers, many of whom were fired, since the acquisition has raised concerns about whether Twitter can sustain its operations and regulate content. Musk has said he may need until the end of the year to stabilize the company and ensure it is financially healthy. He has also floated the idea of bankruptcy and cited a “massive drop” in revenue as advertisers fled over concerns about Twitter’s ability to weed out undesirable content. The platform has also experienced significant glitches and outrages, most recently this month. Twitter has not yet responded to Bloomberg’s request for comment on the recent closure of its offices in India.
