Halloween Stampede: A stampede at a well-known market in Seoul, South Korea's capital, where a sizable throng had assembled for Halloween celebrations, resulted in at least 149 fatalities and 150 injuries, officials reported.
While there was mayhem in the little streets, police and firefighters were spotted attempting to revive victims who had suffered heart arrests. According to local news outlets, the crowd, which is thought to number approximately 1 lakh, gathered on Saturday night in Itaewon, the megacity's central district, which is home to hundreds of businesses and nightclubs.
In the months leading up to October 31, the first Halloween following two years of subdued celebrations because of Covid restrictions, excitement was at an all-time high.

The Korea Herald said that hundreds of people collapsed close to a hotel soon before midnight local time. According to the report, the first complaint of breathing problems was reported to the fire department about 10.30. In approximately an hour, the number reached 100.
In videos that depicted the images of terror, regular individuals also attempted resuscitation by pushing the chest to restart the heart.
Over two hours later, news organisations PTI and AFP, citing officials, reported the first deaths. By 8 am, the number had increased from the first reported nine to 59 and then 149.
According to local media accounts, many of the injured are women in their 20s.

More than 140 ambulances had been sent to the location, an official with the fire department told the news agency AFP.

Several partygoers were being taken to ambulances on Halloween night, according to Hyunsu Yim, a journalist for The Korea Herald, who tweeted: "Absolute scenes of pandemonium in Itaewon right now as the Halloween night has turned into a serious safety danger." He added two pictures as well.

The worst and most depressing Halloween night

He further said, "I've seen some heartbreaking images that I don't think are appropriate to post here. The fact that today will be remembered as one of the worst and most depressing Halloween nights in this country is now a given."

Some Twitter users had been urging others not to visit the area because it was so crowded that it was out of control before the stampede.
"Don't come to Itaewon. It's death-like here… My arm almost broke," a lady wrote on YouTube.

Just after the initial reports, President Yoon Suk-yeol released a statement via a spokesperson: "All connected ministries and agencies, led by the minister of public administration and security should make every effort to swiftly provide relief to the victims."
