Kolkata registered least number of sexual assault cases

Among 19 metros in India, Kolkata has recorded the least number of sexual assault cases on women, NCRB data has revealed.

The metropolis has also not recorded any attempt to rape or sexual harassment case.

Like Kolkata, Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore, too, has not reported any sexual harassment case, the report said.

Delhi is ranked first among 19 metropolitan cities in India in recording the highest number of crimes against women, according to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau.

Rajasthan has earned the dubious distinction of registering the highest number of rape cases in the country followed by Uttar Pradesh, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2019 data has revealed.

While Rajasthan recorded 5, 997 rape cases, UP comes second with 3,065. BJP leaders — central and state — are flashing this data on their social media sites to counter the Congress’ campaign against the UP government over the
Hathras incident.

Of the total reported rape cases in India, four out of five rape victims are from these 10 states – Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Assam, Haryana, Jharkhand, Odisha and Delhi – the latest available data of NCRB shows.

The number of total reported rape cases in these 10 states has almost doubled in the last 10 years – from 12,772 in 2009 to 23,173 in 2019. The rest 26 states have reported almost the same numbers as they did in 2009.

According to data, 12,902 cases of crime against women were registered in Delhi last year, while 6,519 cases were registered by Mumbai Police.

Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the 2019 annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB), 32033 rape cases were registered across the country, or an average of 88 cases daily, slightly lower than 2018 when 91 cases were registered daily.
