International Year of Millet

The United Nations has designated 2023 as the International Year of Millet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s request.

In April 2018, the Indian government declared millet to be a healthy cereal, and the Poshan Mission campaign has also included millet.

A wholesome cereal component for millet is being implemented in 212 districts across 14 States under the National Food Security Mission (NFMS).

The main millet crop production and consumption regions are in Asia and Africa. The top millet-producing countries are Nigeria, Sudan, Niger, and India.

Kangni, Kutki, Kodon, Gangora, China, and Brown Top are grouped with Jowar, Bajra, Ragi, and tiny millets in India, which is the world’s largest producer of millet. One or more millet crop species are grown in the majority of Indian states. Our nation produced between 13.71 and 18 million tonnes of millet over the previous five years, with 2020 and 2021 seeing the largest production.
