PM Modi recently met Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government, during the BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand. Their discussion focused on strengthening India-Bangladesh ties, which have been strained since Sheikh Hasina’s removal in August 2024. However, Yunus’s recent meetings with China and Pakistan have added a new layer of geopolitical intrigue.
Days before meeting PM Modi, Muhammad Yunus visited China and held talks with President Xi Jinping. His remarks on India’s northeastern region—often called the "Chicken’s Neck"—sparked significant buzz. This narrow corridor, which connects India’s Seven Sisters to the mainland, has long been a strategic concern.
Adding to concerns, Yunus had also met with top officials from Pakistan’s ISI earlier, fueling speculation about Bangladesh’s shifting foreign policy. Given Pakistan’s historical interest in Bangladesh and its strained ties with India, this meeting also raised questions about the new interim government’s stance.
PM Modi’s engagement with Yunus comes at a crucial time. Will this meeting help mend India-Bangladesh relations, or will China and Pakistan’s growing involvement further complicate regional dynamics? Only time will tell.
