Wrestlers’ protest: ‘Will hang myself…’, says Brij Bhushan in new video

Wrestlers’ protest: Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh said he would hang himself if even a single allegation of sexual harassment against him was proved. Singh is accused of sexual harassment and intimidation by top women wrestlers of the country. India’s top wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and other prominent grapplers are staging a fresh sit-in protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

“I will hang myself even if a single allegation against me is proved. The matter is with the Delhi Police, so I won’t be able to speak much in detail on the matter. I have been saying this from the first day if these wrestlers have any video, evidence against me. You should ask anyone who is associated with wrestling.. is Brij Bhushan Ravana?”, he can be heard saying in a video.

“Except these wrestlers (who are protesting), ask anyone if I have done anything wrong. I have given 11 years of my life to wrestling, to this country,” the WFI chief said.

Wrestlers unhappy with govt

The wrestlers have alleged that there has been a delay from the government in releasing the report of the committee that was formed to look into the allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh. The protesting wrestlers also want the WFI chief to be stripped of his portfolio.

They have also expressed unhappiness that WFI resumed its activities in spite of the ongoing probe.

Delhi Police on April 28 agreed to file an FIR on the complaint of seven women wrestlers after the Supreme Court’s intervention. The wrestlers termed it as their “first victory in the quest for justice.”

Two FIRs were lodged against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at the Connaught Place Police Station. The first FIR pertains to allegations levelled by a minor victim and is registered under the POCSO Act, along with relevant IPC sections concerning outraging of modesty, etc.

The Supreme Court, while hearing an urgent plea on the matter, concluded that filing of FIRs served the purpose of the plea filed by the protesting grapplers. The court also rejected petitioner’s plea for a court-monitored probe.

‘Protest part of a conspiracy’

Refuting all the allegations against him, BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh reiterated that he was innocent and will cooperate with any inquiry as he trusts the judicial system and the probe agencies. Singh has also claimed the protest was part of a conspiracy to tarnish his image.

“You don’t get justice from Jantar Mantar. If you want justice, you have to go to the police and the court. They never did that until now. Just kept abusing. We will accept whatever the court decides,” he said.

Meanwhile, police tightened security at Jantar Mantar and on Delhi’s borders in the wake of two farmers’ organisation’s announcing visits on Sunday and Monday to the site.
