Viral Video: Videos of mice running around and eating in a long-distance railway pantry car have gone viral on social media. These rodents in the pantry car of the 11009 LTT Madgaon Express have sparked questions about the Indian Railways‘ hygienic practises.

Shocking Rat Infestation in LTT-Madgaon Express Pantry Car

The videos depict the incident that allegedly happened on October 15 and were posted on Instagram by a train passenger. The passenger, who goes by the pseudonym @mangirish_tendulkar, claims that they were astonished to learn that the pantry car was infested with an estimated 6-7 rats, of which only 4 were captured on tape, and that their original plan was to record the train’s engine coupling.

Official Response and Pantry Car Pest Problem

When the passenger allegedly took this up to an official of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the official allegedly replied indignantly, “Look under the tracks; there are 500–600 rats. What is the problem if 5–6 of them get inside?” A mouse is seen nibbling on food in the pantry car in the first video. A second mouse joins in and then runs off. In the second video, mice are seen exploring the pantry platform, which houses open packets of food components, cut veggies, and culinary equipment.

IRCTC Alerted as Concerned Passengers Seek Investigation Into Railcar Infestation

The Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) was tagged on Central Railway’s Mumbai Division’s official account by the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) following multiple reports from concerned users, requesting an investigation into the issue.
