Viral Video: A viral video featuring Maulana Sajid Rashidi, President of the All India Imam Association, has triggered a political and social storm online. In the now widely circulated video, Maulana Rashidi claims that the day Muslims in India reach a population of 80 crore, "no one will dare to raise their voice against them." His controversial remarks have not only stirred tensions but have also reignited demands for a Population Control Bill from several quarters, including social media users tagging Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Viral Video of Maulana Sajid Rashidi Goes Viral, Sparks Hindu-Muslim Population Debate

The viral video was uploaded on social media platform X by a user named Amitabh Chaudhary. The caption reads, “The day we become 80 cr, Hindus won’t utter a word. Open threat by this Maulana to Hindus.”

Watch Here:

In the video, Maulana Sajid Rashidi can be heard saying that there are currently 40 crore Muslims in India, and this number is expected to grow significantly. He asserts that once they become 80 crore, those who oppose them — referring to them as “nafrati chintu” — will fall silent.

He further criticises the concept of "Hum Do, Hamare Do" promoted among Hindus, questioning why Muslims should follow it. The cleric also emphasises that Muslims should strive for demographic equality, even if not attempting to outnumber others.

Demands for Population Control Bill Gain Momentum

As the viral video continues to gain traction, many social media users have tagged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and PM Modi, urging them to implement a strict Population Control Bill. Netizens argue that the demographic balance in India is tilting and needs immediate policy intervention.

One user tagged PM Modi and Amit Shah and wrote, “Population jihad is real. Many Hindu youngsters are no longer marrying, thanks to draconian anti-men laws related to alimony, divorce, etc. The govt must remove alimony (at least in the majority of cases) and also set up a National Council for Men. The Hindu population in India must remain very significantly higher than that of the peaceful community. Take note that many YouTubers are also spreading word against marriages and why marriages are useless and dangerous and so on (because of alimony, laws, etc.). Young Hindus get affected by all this.” A second added, “Where are the unknown men? We need them urgently.” A third said, “Under UCC Bill, the government should make a provision for a strict two-child policy. It’s high time to control this now… Voting rights and all subsidies, including ration, shall be abolished for those who violate this.”

Will Muslims Overtake Hindus in India? What the Data Says

The remarks by Maulana Sajid Rashidi have reopened the debate — Will Muslims ever outnumber Hindus in India? Here's what various studies and data suggest:

According to the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, from 1950 to 2015, the Hindu population in India declined by 7.82%, while the Muslim population rose by 43.15%. As per Pew Research (2020), India has the second-largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia. In 2024, India’s estimated population is around 147 crore, of which nearly 20 crore are Muslims.

Muslim vs Hindu Population Over the Years

To understand the shift over time, consider this: In 1947, just before Partition, there were about 10 crore Muslims in India. After the division of the country, 6.5 crore Muslims migrated to Pakistan, while 3.5 crore stayed behind in India. Since then, the Muslim population has increased significantly, now approaching 20 crore. However, it's important to note that recent academic research by Prof. R.B. Bhagat’s research suggests that the Muslim population growth is actually slowing down faster than the Hindu growth rate.

Between 1991 and 2001, the Hindu population grew by 20%, while the Muslim population grew by 29.3%. But in the next decade (2001–2011), Hindu growth slowed to 16.8%, while Muslim growth also dropped to 24.6%. The religious composition of the country also shows only a marginal shift. In 2001, Hindus made up 80.5% of the population, which reduced slightly to 79.8% in 2011. Meanwhile, the Muslim population rose from 13.4% to 14.2% in the same period.

Fertility Rate Gap Between Hindus and Muslims is Shrinking

Another crucial factor in this debate is the fertility rate. In 2011, the Hindu fertility rate was 2.0, while the Muslim fertility rate was slightly higher at 2.3. However, according to the National Family Health Survey, the fertility gap between Hindus and Muslims has shrunk drastically over time — from 1.1 in 1992 to just 0.5 in 2015. Furthermore, between 2015-16 and 2019-21, the Muslim fertility rate dropped by a significant 10%.

While the viral video of Maulana Sajid Rashidi has ignited concerns over demographics and national identity, the data indicates that although Muslim numbers have increased, their growth rate is slowing.
