Two-month-old baby rescued from rubble

Two-month-old Hamza was rescued in the southern region of Hatay over 140 hours after the quake hit, while Esma Sultan was saved in Gaziantep, according to state media reports. These two successful rescues were part of several miraculous survival stories in the midst of destruction and loss, including the retrieval of a two-month-old baby who was buried under rubble for about 128 hours.

Tens of thousands of rescue workers are still searching through flattened neighbourhoods, facing harsh freezing weather conditions and desperate needs for aid among the millions affected by the disaster. Other survivors rescued days after the earthquake include a two-year-old girl, a six-month pregnant woman, and a 70-year-old woman.

UN relief chief Martin Griffiths warns that the death toll, currently at 28,000, will likely double or more in the aftermath of the quake. Despite security concerns that have led to the suspension of some aid operations, numerous Turkish and international organizations have mobilized to provide search and rescue efforts, with over 32,000 people from Turkish organizations and 8,294 international rescuers working to assist.
