Viral Video: In a shocking turn of events, a mob in eastern Pakistan stormed upon a police station, overpowered the officers and lynched a man who was under custody on charges of blasphemy. This latest act of religious violence highlights the ongoing issue of vigilante justice in Pakistan, where people accused of blasphemy have become targets of violent mobs.
Angry mob stormed the police station
On Saturday, a young man named Muhammad Waris was taken into police custody after being accused of desecrating the Koran. Despite being in police protection, the angry mob stormed the station, located in Nankana Sahib, and took Waris out of custody. The mob then proceeded to beat Waris to death and attempted to set his body on fire. A video of the attack, which has been verified by police, shows the brutal and inhumane act carried out by the mob.
International rights organizations have long criticized the Pakistani government for its inability to prevent such lynchings, which have become increasingly common in the Muslim-majority country. Despite blasphemy being a crime punishable by death in Pakistan, those accused are often subjected to violent acts before they have even been tried in a court of law.

In a rare instance of justice, six men were sentenced to death for the lynching of a Sri Lankan national in 2021. However, such cases are often not met with the same level of outrage or consequences. In response to this latest incident, several police officers have been suspended for their failure to protect the victim, and the Prime Minister has ordered an investigation.
