After Monojit Mishra, another TMCP student leader, Prateek Kumar Dey, is now under public scrutiny. The accused 44-year TMCP student coordinator of the Sonarpur College is seen in a viral video taking a head massage from a young first-year girl.

This viral video creates fresh discussion on the doomed education system in West Bengal. BJP opposition is blaming directly to the Mamata Government. They suspect that due to these toxic and oppressive student leaders, students are fearing to apply to the traditional colleges of West Bengal.

Video Shows Inappropriate Campus Behaviour

Another disturbing case of campus misconduct has surfaced from West Bengal, amid the ongoing outrage over the South Calcutta Law College rape case. A clip posted on X by Amit Malviya(In-charge of BJP’s National Information & Technology Dept. and Co-incharge of West Bengal) shows a man identified as Prateek Kumar Dey, a 44-year-old TMCP student leader at Sonarpur College, receiving a head massage from a first-year girl student inside the union room.

In the video, Dey is seen casually seated while engaging in discussions with fellow students. One of them secretly records the incident, which quickly goes viral online. Malviya captioned the clip, “Predators get promoted in Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal!”, sparking outrage across social media.

Dey isn’t just any student. He holds multiple key posts in the Trinamool Congress ecosystem:

  • Coordinator, TMCP – Sonarpur College

  • President, Rajpur Town TMC Youth Congress

  • President, TMC Youth Wing – Sonarpur South

Locals allege he was handpicked by TMC MLA Lovely Maitra. Shockingly, this isn’t his first offense. TMC Ward 15 Councillor Papia Haldar had previously lodged a police complaint against him for physical and mental harassment. Yet, no action has been taken.

This latest scandal highlights the culture of impunity on campuses under TMCP’s influence. Critics argue it reflects the steady collapse of Bengal’s education system and growing insecurity among female students in government colleges.

Who Is Prateek Kumar Dey?

After the Kasba Law College rape case, this video showing the ‘Dada culture’ inside the WB colleges gets instantly viral. The video clearly shows that the female student was forced to obey his orders, indicating the increasing audacity of such leaders.

Initial reports say that Prateek Kumar Dey is a 44-year-old TMCP leader and student coordinator at Sonarpur College. He is also the President of Rajpur Town TMC Youth Congress and the TMCP president in the Sonarpur South assembly.

The student leader has been handpicked and guarded by the TMC MLA, Lovely Maitra. Apart from this shabby act, there have been former police complaints against him. TMC counsellor of word 15 in Sonarpur, Papia Halder, filed a police complaint against him for mental and physical harassment.

Public Outrage on Social Media

The video has triggered widespread outrage. People are showing their anger against the increasing oppression of foul leaders inside the college premises. They say, “When predators lead student wings, safety vanishes from campuses. TMC’s silence shows where their priorities lie—not with justice, but with power. Bengal’s students deserve better”.

People are raising the slogan “TMC Hatao Bengal Bachao”. This shows their frustration against the Mamta government's failure to protect women even inside work and educational institutions.

BJP Opposition Alleged Impact on Bengal’s College Environment

The opposition BJP leaders are even directly linking this oppressive college union culture with the decreasing rates of college entries. The college admission process across WB takes a setback as students seem disinterested in applying for traditional subjects. Moreover, these evident educational institutional failures are making them opt for other states to complete their higher studies without a political threat.

Back-to-back incidents of rape and misconduct inside the college are staining the entire educational and political stance of WB. The Kolkata High Court has already suspended the practices of college student unions. But the question of whether this will end the ‘dada culture’ still remains evident.
