Bengaluru Viral Video: A quiet afternoon in one of Bengaluru’s busiest markets suddenly spiralled into chaos, leaving the crowd stunned. What began as suspicion soon erupted into raw violence, all caught on camera.

Now, with arrests on both sides, the clash has sparked fiery debates across the city, forcing everyone to question where justice ends and unlawful retaliation begins in the heart of City Market.

Bengaluru Viral Video Sparks Outrage in City Market

In Bengaluru, a shocking video from City Market has left people across the city unsettled. A saree shop owner and his assistant were arrested after a violent assault on a 55-year-old woman accused of shoplifting. The woman was also booked for theft. Umed Ram, who owns Maya Silk Sarees, reported a loss of 61 sarees worth ₹91,500 on September 20.

CCTV footage showed the woman carrying the bundle around 12:30 pm. The next day, when she resurfaced near the shop, the men caught her and attacked. Police initially sent her to jail after recovering part of the stolen sarees. The video sparked massive anger, with pro-Kannada activists accusing officers of negligence and demanding strict action against the attackers.

Social Media Divided Over Shoplifting Versus Assault

The Bengaluru viral video on the City Market incident has divided public opinion sharply. One user commented, “Kisi lady ko aise maarna galt baat hai aap police station me complain kar sakte hai aise kisi ko maar nhi sakte,” showing disapproval of the violence. Another wrote, “Call police. Don’t take law & order in ur hands,” reflecting frustration at vigilante behaviour.

A comment added, “Why kick her. Understand she robbed but this is not the way to treat,” revealing empathy but rejecting brutality. Yet another stated, “He is showing his patriarchal mentality,” pointing anger at the saree shop owner arrested, hinting at gender bias in the assault. These voices reflect society’s struggle to strike a balance between crime and justice.

Legal Provisions on Shoplifting and Vigilante Violence

Shoplifting in India is treated under Section 378 of the IPC as theft, which can lead to a fine and imprisonment. However, assault in anger is also punishable, falling under sections addressing violence and bodily harm.

In the City Market incident, the saree shop owner arrested faces legal action for crossing the boundaries of self-defense. Courts have maintained that justice cannot be entrusted to individuals. Law demands fair proceedings rather than trial by outrage and assault in public spaces.

The City Market incident shows how anger and loss, if not controlled by law, can dangerously escalate into violence and chaos.
