Only 27.37 percent of the prisoners are illiterate

The Union Home Ministry has given many important information to the Parliament about the prisoners lodged in the jails of the country. The surprising thing is that only 27.37 percent of the prisoners are illiterate. That is, the number of books written in the prisoners is very good. According to the information, out of the total 4,78,600 inmates in jails, 1,32,729 i.e. 27.37 percent are illiterate. At the same time, 67 percent of them are Hindus on religious grounds. The number of Muslim prisoners is about 18 percent.

As many as 1,98872 (41.55 per cent) prisoners lodged in jails have studied below the tenth standard, while 1,03,036 (21.52 per cent) have studied above the tenth standard but below graduation. There are 5,677 technical degree or diploma holders.

This information is given in the data provided by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Accordingly, 30,201 (6.31 per cent) prisoners hold bachelor’s degrees while 8,085 (1.68 per cent) have completed post-graduation.

According to the data, of the total prisoners lodged in jails, 4,58,687 (95.83 percent) were male and 19,913 (4.16 percent) were female. Of these 19,913 female prisoners, 6,360 (31.93 per cent) belonged to OBC, 4,467 (22.43 per cent) SC, 2,281 (11.45 per cent) ST and 5,236 (26.29 per cent) belong to ‘Other’ category.

Accordingly, 30,201 (6.31 per cent) prisoners hold bachelor’s degrees while 8,085 (1.68 per cent) have attained post-graduation level.

According to the data, Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state, has the maximum number of 1,01,297 prisoners.
