A viral video titled "Trap of the 20th Century" is going viral on social media. With just seconds of satire, it strikes a nerve—how young modern Gen Z people exist in outdated concepts of marriage and commitment. It depicts the bewilderment, sense of lost identity, and emotional disconnection many young adults face today.

But this joke holds more weight when considered with the hypocrisies of horrifying real-life events the nation has been rocked by.

The Cases of Sonam and Muskan

Two shocking crimes that have perplexed not just the localities where they occurred but living humans everywhere involve two young women accused of killing their husbands, which are both coming under the scope of viral videos.

In Sonam Raghuvanshi's case, her wedding video has gone viral—in the video, Sonam appears vacant next to her husband, Raja, who is smiling & beaming. Just days after their honeymoon in Meghalaya, Raja was found dead in a gorge. After an extensive investigation, it was reported that Sonam had allegedly entered into a conspiracy with her lover, Raj Kushwaha, to kill Raja.

Muskan Rastogi's case is equally chilling. Her husband, a Merchant Navy officer, was allegedly killed and dismembered, and stuffed in a cement drum. Muskan and her alleged lover, Sahil Shukla, went away on a Holi vacation to Himachal while her husband's remains were allegedly held in the basement of their home. The Holi celebration video, now widely circulated, captures her smiling and dancing days after committing a crime.

Is Gen Z Shaadi in Crisis?

These cases, whether seen through the lens of the infamous Holi video or the viral Prof Cheems video, crystallize a significant question: Are Gen Z weddings more intended for Instagram than real life?

It is more aesthetic than authentic: From picture-perfect wedding reels to honeymoon getaways in attractive fancy resorts, a lot of marriages are curated for social media consumption.

Fast love and faster breaks after hookups and apps—when does real emotional maturity start?

Caught between tradition and freedom: On the one hand, Gen Z wishes to assert their freedom; on the other hand, societal pressure to marry remains high, which can make the process toxic with pressure to get married.

Although the video is funny, it highlights some very real generational discomfort. The consequences of Sonam and Muskan's cases remind us that contemporary marriages require more than ceremonies and pictures; they require depth, dialogue, and emotional intelligence.

Gen Z isn't against love or marriage; they're against performative love and marriage. And, until society addresses the outdated meaning of "shaadi," we may continue to see tragedies such as these surface as viral moments—usually for all the wrong reasons.
