Viral Video: Cyclone Michaung Unleashes Havoc in Chennai; Crocodile on Flooded Roads, Flight Operations Halted, and Wildlife Division on Alert

Viral Video: A mugger crocodile was found on a flooded road in the Perungalathur region amid the intense rainfall and floods caused by Cyclone Michaung that has devastated Chennai. The crocodile was seen crossing the road in the footage, which went viral on social media.

The commuter who recorded the footage while seated in her car also shows how two men slowed the bikes upon spotting the crocodile on the road.

Supriya Sahu, the Tamil Nadu forest secretary, has urged locals to maintain their composure and reassured them that the wildlife division is actively handling the matter to avert any possible hazards.

“Many are tweeting about this video. There are a few mugger crocodiles in several of the water bodies in Chennai. These are shy elusive animals and avoid human contact. This one has come out as the water has overflown due to massive rains under the impact of Cyclone Michuang please do not go close to water bodies. There is no possibility of harm to humans if these animals are left alone and unprovoked. No need to panic. Wildlife division has been alerted and they are on the job to avoid any untoward incident,” she wrote on X.

Traffic in Chennai is severely disrupted, forcing the closure of many subway routes. On Monday, December 4, Cyclone Michaung strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm. Since then, the city of Chennai has seen intense rains, which have caused extensive flooding and caused delays to air travel.

Update about Chennai rainfall:

Rain and wind caused several flights, both arriving and departing, to be grounded. The Chennai airport has halted flight operations until Monday at 11 p.m. On December 5, the storm is predicted to land in Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) states that by Monday afternoon, the severe cyclonic storm should have made landfall in the West Central Bay of Bengal off the shores of south Andhra Pradesh and the neighbouring state of north Tamil Nadu.

“It is likely to intensify gradually and move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla during forenoon of December 5 as a ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’ with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph,” the weather agency said.
