Titanic tourist submarine: A submarine has gone missing during a voyage of North Atlantic Ocean in the region where RMS Titanic sunk over a century ago. The submersible tourist vessel has 5 people onboard, comprising of one submarine captain and 4 “mission specialists”. The rescuers are in a definite race against time as the vessel only has 72-96 hours oxygen left. The Canadian research ship MV Polar lost contact with the submarine while it was diving 900 miles away from cast of Boston in United States on Sunday. Government agencies, maritime specialists, and specialized teams mobilized from both US and Canada are trying to locate the missing submarine. U.K. billionaire Hamish Harding, CEO of Action Aviation in Duba is reportedly on board the submersible. Among the others onboard are Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son, Sulaiman.

Rescue mission underway

The search for missing submarine is led by U.S coast guard in Boston. OceanGate expeditions, private company that operate the vessel said in a statement, “Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families. We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep-sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible. We are working toward the safe return of the crewmembers.” According to a report by AFP, US Coast guard has sent two-planes to locate the submersible submarine while their Canadian counterparts have sent a ship and a plane. US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger has said that all available resources and equipment is employes to locate and rescue occupants of the submarine despite vast set of challenges present in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Deep sea Rescue is a challenge

The North Atlantic Ocean has extreme depths and dangerous underwater conditions. There are a lot of submerged debris while wide-open floor and poor visibility presents its own challenges. The timeframe to rescue is diminishing and despite continuous effort of rescuers there is still no trace of submersible. Many underwater Submarines have a device called and pingers that emits sound detectable underwater, and it is unclear whether, Titan (Submersible) has one of those onboard. If the submersible has hit the ocean floor it will be almost impossible to make the rescue as specialized human divers can only carry a mission of few hundred feet. In that case a specialized drone or underwater vehicle can make the rescue, but they are also limited to a few thousand feet.
