G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting sees largest gathering in G20 history, but Russia-Ukraine conflict overshadows progress

G20 Foreign Ministers: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said during the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Thursday that no agreement could be reached among the G20 member countries because of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. All of the member countries as well as 13 guest countries attended the meeting, and 27 foreign ministers joined the FMM. The G20 presidency hosted the largest gathering of G20 foreign ministers to date.

Multilateralist system is currently failing to stop terrorism

In his remarks to the press conference, Jaishankar claimed that the multilateralist system is currently failing to stop terrorism and future wars. He discussed the lack of agreement among the G20 member countries, saying that although officials had to negotiate, there were many issues that the members had already come to an understanding on, including multilateralism, gender issues, counterterrorism, and anti-narcotics. He didn’t want to assign it a percentage. The outcome document contained agreements on the majority of the issues affecting the global south.
