Earthquake rocks Iran

Earthquake rocks Iran: Seven people died and nearly 450 were injured as an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter Scale rocked northwest Iran. Official reports said the earthquake occurred in Khoy city near the Iran-Turkey border on Saturday at 9:44 pm (local time).

Strong tremors were also felt in many areas of the West Azerbaijan province of Iran and cities including Tabriz, the provincial capital of neighbouring East Azerbaijan.

10 km deep quake

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the quake occurred at 23:44:44 (UTC+05:30) and hit 14 km south-southwest of Khoy at a depth of 10 km.

An emergency official said that the inclement weather was making rescue difficult. It was snowing in some of the affected areas, with freezing temperatures and power cuts were reported. Rescue teams were rushed to the affected area and hospitals were put on alert.

Meanwhile, a blast occurred at a military plant in Iran's central city of Isfahan. Reports said it was an "unsuccessful" drone attack.

Iran is prone to earthquakes

At least five people died and 44 others suffered injuries when a 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocks Iran in July 2022. Its epicentre was near Sayeh Khosh village in Hormozgan province, 1,000 kilometres south of the capital, Tehran. The earthquake was felt in many neighbouring countries, the report said.

Iran lies on major seismic faults and experiences one earthquake a day on average. In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people. A magnitude 7 earthquake rocked western Iran in 2017 killing more than 600 people. More than 9,000 were injured.
