Afghanistan Earthquake: On Wednesday, Afghanistan experienced a moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, according to reports from India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremors, felt at 7:54 pm UAE time, originated at a depth of 146 km. The NCS provided details of the earthquake, including its magnitude, location (latitude and longitude), and depth, through a post on social media.
Earthquakes Strike Afghanistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Meghalaya
Just weeks earlier, on February 19, Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan witnessed a 4.5 magnitude earthquake, primarily affecting the Ghizer district. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed the quake’s epicenter along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, with a depth of 102 kilometers. This seismic event led to tremors spreading across nearby regions.
Measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale
In a separate incident, western Meghalaya experienced a mild-intensity earthquake on Tuesday afternoon. Measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale and occurring at a depth of 5 km in the West Garo Hills district, the tremors were felt in neighboring Guwahati and parts of Assam. While the quake caused widespread tremors in Meghalaya, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property, according to the Regional Seismological Centre.
