Ali Larijani: Veteran politician Ali Larijani who assisted the wartime efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran against Israel and the United States has been killed in an Israeli airstrike.
Ali Larijani Death Confirmed
The 67-year-old Larijani along with his son were at his daughter’s home when the attack took place. According to a statement by the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, the deaths of Ali Larijani and his son have been confirmed.
For decades, Ali Larijani had been the mainstay of Iran’s conservative politics. Known in the political circles for his ability to build alliances and shrewd pragmatism, Larijani had long been the bridge builder between the political and military establishment.
Ellie Geranmayeh, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, remarked that Larijani had been at the forefront of recent negotiations that were focused at identifying political breakthroughs with the United States.
What Does The Death Of Iran’s Top Security Official Mean For The War Now?
In 2025, Larijani was appointed as the country’s top security official for the second time after the first war on Iran by Israel. The role of Larijani assumed significant importance after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and many prominent military leaders were killed in joint strikes by Israel and the United States.
Larijani played a crucial role in suppressing the protests in January 2026 and was a rare figure trusted by Iran’s elite leadership for both escalation and de-escalation. The news of his death is not likely to affect Iran much as army leaders of the country have vowed for decisive retaliation, which may potentially spike oil prices across the globe. His death indeed removes an important tactician but not the command structure.
However, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may have gained an upper hand as the off-ramp options of Iran have been severely limited by the death of Ali Larijani.
