Charge of obstructing investigation

Peru has gone through years of political turmoil that have seen corruption, repeated impeachment attempts on several leaders, and curtailment of presidential terms. This new legal battle began in October, when the prosecutor’s office filed a constitutional complaint against Castillo. He was accused of obstructing the investigation for profit from a criminal organization. On Wednesday, Peru’s parliament voted on an impeachment motion to oust the president. In the 130-member parliament, 101 votes were cast in favor of the motion, while only six were in favor of the President. 10 MPs abstained from voting.

According to media, the head of Peru’s constitutional court, Francisco Morales, ordered Vice President Dina Boluarte to assume the presidency in a speech before parliament voted on an impeachment motion. Boluarte then rejected Castillo’s plan to dissolve parliament.

In his very first speech, President Boluarte criticized Pedro’s decision to dissolve parliament.

Boluarte urged the MPs to form a ‘unity government’ in the country. President Dina called on all parties for a political ceasefire, saying she would hold extensive talks for a unity government.

The US also opposed former President Pedro Castillo’s decision to dissolve Parliament. US State Department spokesman Ned Price had said that we oppose any action against the constitution in Peru. We are against any action that would undermine democracy in Peru.
