Justin Trudeau: Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota apologised to the Jewish community on Sunday after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced criticism for visiting and commemorating a Nazi division veteran. Trudeau’s “appalling error in judgement” was brought to light by Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s opposition.

Trudeau’s Meeting with SS Division Veteran

During the visit to Canada this week by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trudeau met and honoured a veteran of the SS’s 14th Waffen-Grenadier Division, a Nazi division. In response to criticism, Poilievre resorted to social media to urge the Prime Minister issue an apology. Poilievre claimed in a tweet that Liberals had made arrangements for a Nazi veteran to be honoured on the Commons floor during Zelenskyy’s visit. He emphasised that Trudeau’s actions were a “appalling error in judgement” because the Prime Minister’s office is in charge of planning and selecting all visitors and schedules for state visits.

Human Rights Group Outraged

Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre (FSWC), a human rights organisation with Canadian roots, also expressed outrage on X, saying it was “appalled that Canada’s Parliament gave a standing ovation to a Ukrainian veteran who served in a Nazi military unit during the Second World War implicated in the mass murder of Jews and others.” Speaker Anthony Rota apologised to the Jewish community in Canada and all across the world in response to the criticism. He regretted his independent choice to acknowledge a person in the gallery during the speech of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Canadian Parliament. Rota made it clear that nobody, not even his fellow lawmakers or the Ukrainian delegation, knew his objective or his statements before he said them. He professed sincere regret for his acts and accepted full responsibility.

Ukraine’s President Acknowledges Canadian Support

President Zelenskyy thanked Canada for continuing to help Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression during his speech to the Canadian Parliament, emphasising the significance of stopping Russia’s aggression. Standing ovations greeted Zelenskyy and Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, as they entered the House of Commons. Zelenskyy stated that Russian aggression “must end with our victory so that Russia will never bring back genocide to Ukraine” in his speech to the Canadian Parliament. “Moscow must lose once and for all, and it will lose,” he declared.
