India Bangladesh Relations: Bangladesh’s border security chief, Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman, recently dismissed reports of large-scale violence against Hindus in his country. During a press conference following the India-Bangladesh border talks, he insisted that the situation was not as alarming as depicted in media reports.
However, India's concerns about Hindu atrocities in Bangladesh have been growing, especially since the caretaker government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took charge in August last year.
The Indian government officially revealed in Parliament that between November 26, 2024, and January 25, 2025, at least 23 Hindus were killed, and 152 temples were attacked in Bangladesh. Despite these figures, the Yunus government continues to downplay the severity of the crisis.
PM Modi has expressed deep concern over these targeted attacks, going beyond the usual diplomatic framework of India-Bangladesh relations. Sources suggest that he is closely monitoring the situation and may consider taking decisive steps if the atrocities do not stop.
The United States has also criticised Bangladesh for failing to protect its Hindu minority. Washington’s firm stance has put additional pressure on the Yunus government. US President Donald Trump, during PM Modi’s recent visit to America, made a striking remark when asked about the Bangladesh crisis. He stated that PM Modi has a "free hand" to handle the situation in his own way, hinting at India's growing influence on the matter.
The continued attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh could escalate tensions between the two nations. India has already sent its diplomat, Vikram Misri, to Dhaka to assess the ground situation and present India's stance. If the violence does not stop, PM Modi may implement strict measures, which could impact trade agreements and diplomatic ties.
India-Bangladesh relations are at a critical juncture. The coming weeks will reveal whether Bangladesh takes concrete action or if PM Modi responds with strong countermeasures to protect Hindus in the region.
