PM Modi US Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States marked a significant milestone in strengthening India-US relations. His meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington DC focused on deepening cooperation in defence, trade, energy, and global diplomacy. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to boosting economic ties while also addressing critical international issues.
During the meeting, their warm camaraderie was evident, with Trump embracing PM Modi and calling him a “great friend.” He even added, “We missed you, we missed you a lot.” However, beyond the gestures, key agreements were reached, shaping the future of India-US relations.
Civil Nuclear Agreement
One of the major highlights of PM Modi’s US visit was the renewed focus on nuclear energy cooperation. Both leaders agreed to advance collaboration in atomic energy, ensuring greater technology transfer and localisation of US-designed nuclear reactors in India.
A joint statement confirmed that India will amend its Atomic Energy Act and Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CLNDA) to facilitate private sector participation and boost nuclear reactor production. This move is expected to significantly enhance India’s energy security.
US-India Trade: Aiming for $500 Billion in Bilateral Trade
Economic cooperation remained a key focus during the talks. PM Modi and Donald Trump set an ambitious goal of doubling bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.
Speaking to the media, PM Modi stated, “We have set ourselves the target of more than doubling our bilateral trade. Our teams will work towards concluding a mutually beneficial trade agreement soon.”
The discussions highlighted the importance of reducing trade barriers, increasing market access, and strengthening investment opportunities for both nations.
US to Supply F-35 Fighter Jets
In a significant move, the United States announced an increase in military sales to India, including the sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets. This decision positions India among a select group of nations, primarily NATO allies, that have access to these advanced aircraft.
Trump emphasised the importance of this deal, stating, “We will be increasing military sales to India by billions of dollars. The supply of F-35 jets will strengthen India’s defence capabilities.”
This development is expected to enhance India's air combat power and boost the strategic partnership between the two nations.
MIGA vs MAGA: A Shared Vision for Growth
PM Modi introduced a new term, MIGA (Make India Great Again), inspired by Trump’s famous campaign slogan, MAGA (Make America Great Again).
During his address, PM Modi said, “President Trump talks about MAGA. In India, we are working towards a Viksit Bharat, which in the American context translates into MIGA. Together, India and the US share a MEGA partnership for prosperity.”
This statement underlined India’s focus on economic and technological advancement while highlighting the strong bond between the two countries.
Russia-Ukraine War: India Advocates Peace
The Russia-Ukraine conflict was another crucial topic of discussion. PM Modi welcomed the US’s efforts to resolve the crisis and reiterated India’s stance on global peace. He dismissed claims that India is neutral, stating,
“Many believe India is neutral, but let me clarify—India stands for peace. We are on the side of stability and dialogue.”
PM Modi also emphasised India’s diplomatic efforts, having engaged with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders to push for a peaceful resolution.
IMEC: A New Trade Route for Global Growth
Another key agreement during PM Modi’s US visit was the partnership on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Trump described it as one of the greatest trade routes in history.
He stated, “We agreed to build a historic trade route that will run from India to Israel, Italy, and onward to the US. This will be a major boost for global commerce.”
With substantial investments planned, this initiative aims to enhance connectivity and economic integration across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
A Stronger India-US Partnership Ahead
PM Modi’s meeting with Donald Trump reinforced India’s growing influence in global affairs. From nuclear energy cooperation and increased trade to military advancements and global diplomacy, this visit set the stage for a deeper India-US partnership.
