Bangladesh: Over 50 dead due to Boat capsize; Most were enroute to Durga Puja celebration

Bangladesh: As 26 more bodies were found on Monday, the death toll from Sunday's horrific boat capsize in Panchagarh has risen to fifty. The mortality toll was confirmed by additional deputy commissioner, Dipankar Roy, from the Mareya Union Parishad control room.

There are 25 women and 13 children among the victims; the majority of them were en route to the Bodeshwari Temple to celebrate Mahalaya. It is considered to be an integral part of Durga Puja.

According to Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Jahirul Islam, the event was reported on Sunday afternoon from the Aowlia Ghat in Marea Union. Thousands of people gathered along the river banks to observe the search operations as a Dhaka-based diving team searched the river for drowned people.

Due to low safety regulations and overloading, boat accidents are frequent in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is crisscrossed by 230 rivers since it is located on the lower course of two powerful rivers, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra. Notably, a passenger ferry struck a cargo ship in December of last year, causing it to sink, and about 37 people perished.
