Benjamin Netanyahu Tasked To Form Israel’s Next Government ? Details here

Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Sunday officially invited Benjamin Netanyahu to form a new government after he promised he would be the “prime minister of all people”.

A few days after the November 1 election, a statement issued by the President’s Office said that Netanyahu, who won the support of 64 members of the Knesset (Israel’s parliament), has been entrusted with the responsibility of forming the next government. This was the fifth election in the country in the last four years. Herzog invited Netanyahu to form a government during a meeting at the presidential residence.

Why is it beneficial for India

Netanyahu (73), Israel’s longest-serving leader, has led the country by winning elections five times, more than any other prime minister in the country’s 74-year history. Netanyahu will have 28 days to form the government. If there is a need to extend the time, then the President has the legal right to give time up to fourteen additional days.

The return of Netanyahu to power is likely to further deepen India-Israel strategic relations. An advocate of strong bilateral ties with India, Netanyahu was the second Israeli prime minister to visit India in January 2018. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel in July 2017 was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to this country. The association between the two leaders had become a matter of intense discussion at that time.

What did Isaac Herzog say?

President Isaac Herzog said he was “not unaware” of the corruption trial against Netanyahu, but a court ruled that it was not an obstacle to Netanyahu’s mandate. “Israel needs a government that may not reflect all worldviews and sections of the legislature in its structure, yet knows how to lead a process of engagement and integration among all peoples and a responsible, alert, open, clear, and good with other branches of government.

President Herzog announced on Friday (11 November) that he would invite Netanyahu to form a new government after consulting with the leaders of all political parties that were elected to the 25th Knesset in the November 1 election.
