Brazil: Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, commonly known as Lula, won the election becoming the 39th President of Brazil, on Sunday.
According to the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court, in a tightly contested election, Lula received 50.9 percent of the vote over incumbent far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s 49.1 percent.
After ending the first two terms, which lasted from 2003 to 2010, the socialist democrat Lula is expected to be elected president of Brazil for a third time.
In a speech on Sunday night, Lula called for international collaboration to protect the Amazon rainforest and promote more equitable trade while promising to unify a divided nation and ensuring that Brazilians “lay down arms that never should have been taken up.”

Lula’s Judicial Fight
After his name surfaced in the contentious Car Wash affair, which exposed government corruption in the awarding of contracts by a state-owned petroleum company, Petrobras, Lula, a former union leader, experienced unparalleled political turmoil.
As a result of his conviction in the case, Lula was disqualified from running in the 2018 presidential election. The country’s Supreme Court, however, overturned the judgement in 2021, finding that the 2018 ruling was biassed against the 77-year-old head of state.
Jair Bolsonaro (67) stayed silent about the outcomes in the meantime. The sources suggest that electoral officials worry Bolsonaro would reject the result by alleging the election was manipulated.

Period of Bolsonaro
The criticism Jair Bolsonaro received for his careless handling of Covid by refusing to acknowledge the impending risk the virus was capable of posing appears to be encouraging the outcome of the election. Brazil reported approximately 7,00,000 fatalities as a result.
Along with failing to control the country’s ongoing inflation, Bolsonaro’s administration made poor choices that increased the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio.
