Canada to change its Express Entry immigration route

Canada is planning a major change to its points-based express entry system. The Government of Canada currently needs candidates with a wide range of skills to meet their needs. Therefore, Canada is considering allowing companies to invite such workers.

As per the proposed bill, the new version of the Express Entry system will allow invitations based on criteria such as specific academic credentials and industry-based occupations.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser indicated that the Express Entry program is still in full swing today, being reviewed in various discussions with stakeholders in the queue or in public forums. Currently, the Express Entry system ranks candidates from a common pool using factors such as age, education, work experience, job offers, language skills (including French).

Those who meet the cut-off in the Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) are invited to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

Canada is expected to resume its Express Entry draws for all three classes in early July. Also, the waiting time for new applications is expected to be 6 months, as it was before the corona pandemic. Canada halted express entry draws for the CEC category in early 2021, and draws for FSWP candidates were suspended from December 2022.

Recently, the country also announced additional benefits for international students. From the summer of 2022, international students in Canada and a postgraduate work permit expiring between January and December 2022 will qualify for an additional open work permit valid for 18 months. “We are looking for a simple, quick process for this and details will be made available in the coming weeks,” the IRCC said.

Around 95,000 PGWP will be exhausted in 2022, and 50,000 PGWP holders can benefit from this newly opened work permit. Indians have been the top beneficiaries of PR permits as well as student visas. In 2020, Indian citizens received 50,841 invitations to apply for permanent residency in Canada under the ‘express entry’ route. In 2021, nearly 100,000 Indians became permanent residents of Canada as the country accepted a record 405,000 new immigrants in its history. Canada has over 622,000 foreign students, including 217,410 Indians as of December 31, 2021.
