China: Wuhan, where the coronavirus pandemic first emerged, resumes all schools

Wuhan, which served as the Ground Zero for the coronavirus disease, seems to have gotten over the pandemic as life has returned to some semblance of normality in the city. Students in face masks hoarded the streets for the first time since the outbreak emerged as the Chinese city resumed all its schools from September 1.

The Chinese city, which underwent harsh lockdowns to curb the infection along with mass testing, finally ended virtual classes, bringing the normalcy back.

According to Chinese media reports, nearly 1.4 million children resumed their classes in 2,842 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools on Tuesday after 7 months. The city had already re-opened high schools in May.

Several pictures, which have gone viral on the internet show, thousands of students hoisting the Chinese flag as a part of their daily routine amid social distancing guidelines.

Temperature checks, disinfectant sprays and face masks are among some of the necessary measures taken to keep the children safe.

Meanwhile, the authorities have instructed schools to take precautionary measures and stock up on disease control equipment. Schools have also been ordered to conduct regular drills and training sessions to help prepare for new outbreaks.

Wuhan reported over 50,340 coronavirus cases and was held accountable for 80 percent of China’s more than 4,600 casualties due to the pandemic.

The city which conducted a mass testing campaign targeting its 11 million residents in May hasn’t registered any new case since weeks.

Wuhan released its “last patient” from the hospital on August 30.

Meanwhile, the Wuhan University reopened on August 31. As per media reports, college graduates are also set to return starting next week.

Shanghai had re-opened schools in May, and the capital city Beijing, which recently reported local transmission of the virus, will be reopening all schools and kindergartens in September.
