Donald Trump: Former US President Donald Trump took his private plane to arrive in New York on Monday to face charges of paying hush money to a porn star. His lawyers oppsed TV coverage of the court proceedings.
New York is tight security and the mayor has warned potential “rabble-rousers” to behave. Trump is due to surrender at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday. He will be fingerprinted prior to appearing before a judge for an arraignment where he will plead not guilty.
Trump’s plane was painted in red, white and blue with “TRUMP” written on it in big letters and an image of the American flag on the tail. It landed at LaGuardia Airport in Queens. He was dressed in a blue suit and a red tie.
Appeal against TV coverage
Todd Blanche, a prominent criminal defense lawyer and former federal prosecutor will defend him in court. Blanche and Trump’s other lawyers appealed to the judge not to allow videography, photography and radio coverage of the arraignment.
They argued it would “exacerbate an already almost circus-like atmosphere around this case” and “detract from both the dignity and decorum of the proceedings and courtroom.”
Judge Juan Merchan was yet to decide on the matter.
Merchan had allowed limited photography before last year’s criminal trial in which Trump’s real estate company was convicted of tax fraud.
Hush money case
Trump is indicted for paying $130,000 to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign. Daniels has said she was paid to keep silent about a sexual encounter she had with Trump at a Lake Tahoe hotel in 2006. Trump has denied he had any such relationship with her.
Meanwhile, a motorcade of several vehicles accompanied Trump from his Mar-a-Lago estate to the airport in nearby West Palm Beach. Before leaving, Trump posted on social media, “WITCH HUNT, as our once great Country is going to HELL!”
