Donald Trump: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump had a friendly phone call focused on defence, trade, and strategic partnership. This could mean that ties between India and the U.S. will improve this week.
The leaders went over the success made in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, which is a way for the two countries to work together on both economic and security issues. Both sides agreed to stay in touch as talks continue on key issues and said they understood how important it was to strengthen their relationship.
The ability to have trade talks during tariff issues
The call comes at a time when there are still problems with the high American taxes on Indian goods, which were raised a lot during Trump’s presidency to fix trade deficits. The United States put tariffs of up to 50% on important Indian goods earlier this year, one of the highest amounts seen in decades.
Modi and Trump, on the other hand, stressed that they both wanted to increase trade and work towards a bilateral trade deal, even with these issues in mind. Indian officials say talks are moving forward, and both sides are hopeful that they can reach a deal that is good for both countries.
Strategic Defence Partnership
Besides trade, the talks also focused on working together on defence. The two leaders talked about how they are still working together on important technologies and security. This is an example of how the Indo-Pacific region’s strategy is coming together.
Planning for the Future
There are still a lot of differences, especially when it comes to tariffs and market access, but this phone call shows that both sides are willing to work together.
