Earthquake of 6.1 magnitude rocks central Philippines

The United States Geological Survey on Thursday (February 16) confirmed a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in the Masbate region of central Philippines. Although no tsunami warning has been issued due to the earthquake, no damage or loss of life has been reported, news agency AFP reported.

The USGS said the epicenter was 11 kilometers (seven miles) from the nearest village of Miaga in the Uson municipality of the province’s main island, Masbate. According to the local time, after 2:00 pm, there was a very strong earthquake which woke up the people.

‘Classes were already canceled’

The media of the Philippines has said in its many different reports that they are constantly feeling the tremors of the earthquake. Due to these tremors, the Education Department of Masbate had allegedly suspended the classes for Thursday as a precautionary measure, but everyone was shaken by this earthquake on Thursday.

Gregoria Edig, a disaster officer at the Municipality of the Philippines, said that she also felt aftershocks about an hour after the earthquake. He told that buildings and other structures have also been damaged in the area.

Earthquake devastation in Turkey

Describing about the earthquake in Turkey, Turkish President Rajab Tayyab Erdoğan confirmed on Tuesday that due to last week’s earthquake, more than 35,000 people have died in the country so far.

Erdoğan told that the death toll is bound to increase further as the work of removing the debris is still not completed. At the same time, many of the thousands of people rendered homeless after the earthquake are still struggling to meet basic needs.
