Explosion in China: Chinese state-run media agency Xinhua reports that a gas explosion has killed at least 31 people in the country’s Ningxia region.
The explosion occurred in a barbecue restaurant on Wednesday evening in the capital city of Yinchuan, just before the Dragon Boat Festival. Seven people have been admitted to a hospital. They have received injuries ranging from cuts, bruises and burns. Most of these injuries are from flying glass.
Reuters says that Chinese President Xi Jinping urged authorities “to prioritize the treatment of the injured and emphasized the need to enhance safety supervision in key industries and sectors.”
The accident happened apparently because of a leaking liquefied petroleum gas tank in a restaurant, according to Xinhua.
According to Reuters, “incidents involving gas and chemical explosions remain unfortunately common in China.” In 2015, 173 people lost their lives after a series of explosions in the northern port city of Tianjin.
It is noteworthy that the area where the Wednesday explosion happened has a significant Muslim population.
ABC News posted a video of the site of the explosion which showed rescuers carrying the dead and the injured in ambulances. A woman could be heard crying in the background.
South China Morning Post quoted Shanghai media reports as saying, “The victims included high school students and the elderly.”
Investigate the cause, says Xi
President Xi also told the local authorities to investigate the cause of the gas explosion.
Xinhua reports that by Thursday afternoon, the local police had arrested the restaurant’s owner and shareholders. The restaurant’s assets have been frozen.
Dragon Boat Festival
According to South China Morning Post, Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the death of Chinese poet Qu Yuan. He lived and died in the ancient state of Chu during “a bloody time when the different provinces of modern-day China fought endlessly against each other.”
