FIFA Worldcup 2023: In an effort to commemorate the World Cup's 100th anniversary in Uruguay, the 2030 edition of the competition will follow a novel format that spans six nations on three continents.
Football's continental governing bodies came to an agreement with FIFA to accept the joint offer from co-hosts Spain, Portugal, and Morocco as the only contender for the hosting rights, which included holding matches in South American nations Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
These nations will each host one game to start the competition, allowing FIFA to stage the first match in Montevideo, Uruguay, the site of the first World Cup final in 1930. Prior to including Morocco, the bid was initially a partnership between Spain and Portugal.
“The centennial World Cup could not be far from South America, where everything began,” said the president of South American soccer body CONMEBOL, Alejandro Dominguez, . “The 2030 World Cup will be played in three continents.”
To have unique global footprint
"In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, three continents — Africa, Europe and South America — six countries — Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay — welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the FIFA World Cup," said Infantino.
The 211 member federations' annual conference must still formally approve the FIFA Council's endorsement of a unified 2030 candidature. But that ought to be merely a formality. FIFA said that a separate congress will select the 2034 team.
“FIFA continues its cycle of destruction against the greatest tournament on earth,” FSE said in a statement. “Horrendous for supporters, disregards the environment and rolls the red carpet out to a host for 2034 with an appalling human rights record.”
While this structure necessitates considerable time zone switching, some have expressed displeasure with it, including Football Supporters Europe, a UEFA-recognized fan group that criticised FIFA's choice.
Host nations react
Morocco, which recently made significant infrastructure investments and was picked to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations, wins with the 2030 choice.
The selection, according to a statement from Morocco's Royal Cabinet, "recognised Morocco's choice place in the ranks of great nations."
The previous head of Spain's football federation, Luis Rubiales, has raised fears among Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez that he may jeopardise the country's World Cup bid.
After a contentious incident during the Women's World Cup final in which he kissed a player on the lips during the awards ceremony, Rubiales was suspended by FIFA and ultimately resigned.
Argentina hosted the World Cup in 1978, Spain hosted the event in 1982, and Uruguay held the first World Cup in 1930. The first World Cups to be held in Portugal, Morocco, and Paraguay.
