Former president Obama among 500 Americans banned from Russia in for US sanctions

In reaction to the most recent round of sanctions announced by Washington, 500 US citizens will be barred, according to a statement from Russia’s foreign ministry on Friday, according to news agency Reuters.

In a statement, the Russian foreign ministry noted that the action followed the US’s denial of visas to journalists accompanying foreign minister Sergei Lavrov to the UN last month.

“Washington should have learned a long time ago that not a single hostile attack on Russia will go unpunished,” Russia’s foreign ministry’s statement added.

The ministry added that Russia has turned down the most recent US request for consular access to the jailed Evan Gershkovich of the Wall Street Journal, who was held in March of this year on accusations of spying.

In an effort to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and to step up one of the toughest sanctions campaigns ever put into place, the US slapped penalties against more than 300 targets earlier on Friday, according to Reuters.

“Today’s actions will further tighten the vise on [Vladimir] Putin’s ability to wage his barbaric invasion and will advance our global efforts to cut off Russian attempts to evade sanctions,” the US treasury secretary, Janet Yellen, said in a statement.

According to The Guardian, the treasury department said it slapped sanctions on 104 entities, including businesses that import, export, or manufacture electronics components, semiconductors, and microelectronics for Russia. These firms included 22 people.
