G20 Summit: Following the proposal put forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday, the African Union became a permanent member of the G20. The move was welcomed by all member countries.
PM Modi then extended an invitation to Azali Assoumani, the president of the Union of Comoros and chair of the African Union (AU), to take a place at the G20 high table.
PM Modi and Assoumani hugged after being taken to his seat by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar amid clapping and cheering.
Honoured to welcome the African Union as a permanent member
Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, “Honoured to welcome the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 Family. This will strengthen the G20 and also strengthen the voice of the Global South.”
The idea of including this significant economic region of the global south in the select club of the world’s leading economies was enthusiastically embraced.
“With support from all of you, I invite the African Union to join the G20,” at G20 Summit PM Modi said. The 55-nation African Union gained permanent membership in the G20 as a result.
“In keeping with the sentiment of sabka saath (with everyone), India has proposed that the African Union should be given permanent membership of the G20. I believe we are all in agreement on this proposal. With your agreement (he banged the gavel thrice)…,” Modi said.
India has always stood for for the G20 to include the African Union. In a letter to the G20 leaders in June of this year, PM Modi made the case for the AU being a permanent member of the organisation. The 55 member states that make up the nations of the African continent make up the AU, a powerful institution.
