Google says fewer of its employees will get promotion in 2023

Tech giant Google has now issued a new decree after its decision to lay off 12,000 employees. The company is now preparing to cut the promotions of the employees. According to media reports, Google has warned its employees that there will be a reduction in the number of promotions to more senior positions this year.

The company has said this in an email sent to the employees

According to media reports, the company said in an email sent to employees that the promotion process is manager-led and will be largely similar to last year – although we are also hiring at a slower pace. We are planning fewer promotions than L6 and when Google was growing rapidly.

The move comes after the implementation of Google Review and Development (GRAD), the company’s newly created performance appraisal system for employees. According to reports, this system will result in more Google employees receiving low-performance ratings and fewer high marks.

The email states, “If your manager believes you are ready to be promoted, they will nominate you. Employees working in technical roles who wish to self-nominate will have 6 steps to do so.” The time is between March 8. That means the employees themselves will be able to nominate for promotion.

12,000 layoffs in January

The company announced more than 10,000 layoffs last year, after which Google announced in January that it was cutting 12,000 jobs. Although speculations about the layoffs had been rife for months, the massive layoff came as a shock to some employees.

Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai had said that the cuts have been made after careful consideration. We have decided to reduce approximately 12,000 employees from our workforce. We have already sent a separate email to affected employees in the US. In other countries the process will take longer due to local laws and regulations.

The company also laid off in India

Not only this, Google India has also fired 453 employees from various departments of the company. The workers were informed about their termination through e-mail. According to reports, the layoff mail was sent to the employees by Sanjay Gupta, country head and vice president of Google India.
