UK: In a recent report, the Henry Jackson Society highlighted the difficulties Hindu students and their families experience by revealing the prevalence of anti-Hindu prejudice in UK schools. This is the first investigation on anti-Hindu prejudice in the UK. Surprisingly, 51% of parents polled stated that their child had encountered anti-Hindu prejudice at school, but less than 1% of schools with Indian pupils contacted by freedom of information (FOI) in the five years before to this reported any anti-Hindu-related occurrences.
According to the paper, teaching about Hinduism in schools may encourage religious discrimination against Hindu students. Only 15% of the parents polled thought that schools did an adequate job of identifying and responding to anti-Hindu occurrences. Incidents of bullying have been reported by parents, with some students receiving beef thrown at them for being Hindu and others hearing statements like "Hindus are the herbivores at the bottom of the food chain, we will eat you up." Some students have been told to watch Zakir Naik videos and convert after saying things like "Hinduism makes no sense."
Bullying of some youngsters has increased significantly, especially since PM Modi's ascent to power in India and the revocation of Article 370. The research urges schools to be more proactive in identifying and preventing anti-Hindu hate, as well as the establishment of new reporting requirements that address such instances. If this isn't done, opportunities to create a secure and egalitarian society—not just for the Hindu community, but for all minority communities—may be lost. Concern over the absence of national reporting requirements for incidences of racial or religious hatred in schools is developing as these episodes are more often than previously believed and have the potential to harm community cohesion.
