Historic ! Nepal Gets Sushila Karki as First Woman Prime Minister, PM Modi Vows Strong Support, Will She Be Able To Curb Violence

Nepal swore in Sushila Karki as its first female interim PM on September 12, 2025, after a Gen Z-led revolt toppled KP Sharma Oli. Backed by a Discord poll, Modi supports her, but with 22 deaths and unrest, can she curb violence?

The 13th of September 2025 in Kathmandu. Nepal reached a historic milestone on Friday when Sushila Karki, who used to be the head of the Supreme Court, became the country’s first female acting prime minister. The appointment came after a week of violent protests led by Gen Z that pushed PM KP Sharma Oli to step down. This change in digital democracy was caused by a poll on Discord that was set up by young activists.

Support for Modi in Diplomatic Terms

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Honorable Ms. Sushila Karki on assuming the office of the interim Prime Minister of Nepal,”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a message to Karki on Saturday. India is still fully dedicated to the peace, growth, and well-being of Nepal’s sisters and brothers, with a picture of Shiva Lingam. His message talks about cultural links and India’s strategic interest in Nepal, which acts as a buffer between India and China, even though the border has been tense in the past.

Problems with Bringing Peace Back

It will be hard to get there. Even though there is less bloodshed now, the fragile peace could break if Karki doesn’t listen to people who want justice. Given how complicated Nepal’s politics are, analysts stress the need to look into the unrest and rebuild trust.

Fighting Corruption and Government

Karki’s promise to fight crime is at the heart of her job. Protesters say she is guilty of nepotism and graft, so her success relies on making reforms, which is harder to do since Nepal’s government has been unstable since 2008.

How to Handle Geopolitical Tensions

India and China are interested in Nepal because of its location. To keep sovereignty and stability, Karki needs to find a balance between India’s help and changes in the area, such as trade disputes.

What can young people do for the future?

Karki’s rise was shaped by Gen Z’s rise in technology. Youth participation is important because their continued involvement could either help her lead better or put pressure on her if goals aren’t met.

Will stability win?

Karki gives people hope because India is behind him, and he is young. Still, the question stays: can she stop the violence and make Nepal’s future safe and prosperous?
